Common questions

I cannot download the note from the confirmation screen. What should I do?

If you can still see the confirmation page, write down the long reference number and keep it in a safe place.

Then check to see if you have received an email. If you have received the email, tap on the download link.

If you have not received the email, check your spam or junk email folder. If the email has not arrived after a few hours, you can apply for another isolation note. You can backdate the note if you need to.

I got to the confirmation screen but did not get my email. What should I do?

What is the long reference number?

The 16-digit reference number helps us find your isolation note if you have problems accessing it. Write it down and keep it safe.

It also lets employers check an isolation note is valid. They can do this by using the Check an isolation note service.

I have forwarded the email to my employer but they cannot open the PDF. What should I do?

Access to your note (the PDF) from the email we sent you is protected. Only you, or someone who knows your date of birth, can access the PDF from the email.

If your employer knows your date of birth, they should be able to download the PDF.

Alternatively:

  1. download the PDF from the link in your email
  2. save it
  3. attach it to an email and send it to your employer
Can I get another copy of the note?

You can download the note as many times as you want from the email. If you no longer have the email, contact us.

I am at higher risk from coronavirus, can I get an isolation note?

You can only get an isolation note if you:

  • get symptoms of coronavirus or test positive
  • live with someone who has symptoms of coronavirus or tests positive and you are not fully vaccinated
  • are told to self-isolate by a test and trace service or the NHS COVID-19 app

If you cannot work from home and are concerned about having to go to work, talk to your employer. Employers should make sure suitable arrangements are in place so you can go to work.
