What happens if I move while waiting for NHS treatment?

If you're on an NHS waiting list and the same clinical commissioning group (CCG) covers the area you're moving to, your position on the waiting list will not be affected.

If you're moving to a part of England covered by a different CCG and you want your care to be transferred, the new CCG should take into account the time you've already spent on the original waiting list. However, the transfer of your care and treatment should be agreed by the two CCGs before you move.

Waiting times for NHS treatment in England are managed by local CCGs. You can use the services directory to find your local CCG.

Moving to a different CCG's area

If you're moving to an area managed by a different CCG while you're on an NHS waiting list, you can:

ask to remain on the waiting list of your current CCG – contact the hospital where you're receiving the treatment
arrange for your treatment to be transferred to the new CCG

You should discuss your options with your GP, consultant or other healthcare professional, such as physiotherapists or dentists, beforehand. They can give you advice about your condition and information on treatment waiting times to help you make a decision.

If you want your care to be transferred, contact both your current CCG and the new CCG immediately to let them know. Both CCGs can give you help and advice about their waiting list policies.

If your transfer to the new CCG is not agreed in advance, the time you've already spent on the original waiting list may not be taken into account. However, this also depends on individual circumstances. You should contact both CCGs in plenty of time before you move to avoid affecting your position on the waiting list.
