Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is the leading provider of mental health, learning disabilities and substance misuse services in Derby city and Derbyshire county. We also provide a wide range of children’s services. We employ over 2,500 staff based in 100 locations across the whole of Derbyshire. Across the county and the city, we serve a combined population of approximately one million people.

Our story
Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1 February 2025 when Monitor, the independent regulator of health services in England, authorised Derbyshire Mental Health Services NHS Trust to become a Foundation Trust.

In April 2011 we became the provider of children’s universal and specialist services for Derby city following a successful tender process.

As part of the Transforming Community Services (TCS) programme, community paediatric services and substance misuse services were also transferred into the organisation from NHS Derby City.

Patients say it’s good to receive support from Derbyshire Healthcare

Patients receiving care from Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have given positive feedback about their experiences, rating the care they received as being amongst the best in the country.

The outcomes of the national community mental health survey were published yesterday by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The survey asked patients for feedback on key areas, such as how their care was organised, planned and reviewed.  The Trust scored particularly highly in supporting individuals to build a life beyond illness; for example by taking part in local activities and finding and keeping accommodation.  These are key factors in supporting an individual to recover from a mental illness, by providing support to live independently within the community.

The Trust also received feedback that patients feel staff seek to understand what is important to them in their everyday lives and actively provide help to achieve this.

Carolyn Green, Director of Nursing and Patient Experience at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “I am delighted with the outcome of the recent patient survey.  Our patients have reported that they are treated with dignity and respect whilst in our services, that they are listened to and helped to make decisions about their treatment and wider issues that affect their mental health.”

Feedback relating to Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust placed the Trust in the ‘best’ or ‘average’ performing categories for Trusts nationally, in each of the 43 areas reviewed.

Safe Staffing at Derbyshire Healthcare

It is an NHS England requirement that all Trusts publish thier inpatient nursing staffing levels each day by ward area, showing the Trust's actual and planned staff fill rates. This is in response to the Francis Report, where a commitment was made that all NHS Trusts with inpatient areas would publish full staffing data (by month, by ward area) from May 2014, and then on an on-going monthly basis. The intention is to show how Trusts across the NHS ensure the safety of their staffing levels and skill mix.
