Trust joins forces with University

Middlesex University has awarded 'University Affiliated’ status to Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust. The agreement, which was signed at a ceremony at the University on Wednesday 22 January, will enhance the current partnership between the two organisations, demonstrating a strong commitment to education, research and development.

The agreement builds on the existing strong relationship between the University and the Trust, which has previously included opportunities for clinical placements for nursing students, bespoke and innovative educational projects for staff development, and evaluation and research projects on critical clinical practice questions.

The 'University Affiliated’ status will facilitate stronger working relations, including the opportunity for experienced academics at Middlesex and experienced clinicians within the Trust to co-produce mental health education and research projects which meet the needs of local people. The University’s expertise and partnerships related to sport education will also be accessible to the Trust.

Skills and knowledge at both organisations will be enhanced by the partnership, which will see clinicians from the Mental Health Trust working with Middlesex students and sharing their front line expertise, and Middlesex University experts providing training for staff at the Trust.  This includes opportunities for Trust staff to gain university level qualifications for projects they carry out in the workplace.

Middlesex University Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the School of Health and Education Jan Williams said: “Middlesex University and the Trust have collaborated for a number of years on student placements, conferences and continuing professional development so we are delighted to have the opportunity to formally extend our partnership. We’re looking forward to working together to respond to the challenges facing mental health and community health service users and staff, through research and development of innovative ways of working.”

Maria Kane, Chief Executive of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust said: “Our relationship with Middlesex University is a crucial part of how we advance our research, develop our workforce and support the training of the next generation of NHS staff, so I am thrilled that we are able to strengthen our partnership through this agreement. We will be looking for new and innovative ways to work together to continue to improve the health and wellbeing of the community our Trust serves.”

Major improvements to local adult mental health services

To help improve patient experience Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust are now making it easier for people to access their services.

A new Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment (CRHT) service for urgent referrals is being introduced, along with a new service for non-urgent or routine referrals.

The new CRHT service will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, assessing service users wherever they are, such as at their GP surgery, A&E or their own home. It will mean that services will be provided closer to people’s homes rather than them having to come to one of the current Acute Assessment Centres in Haringey and Enfield, which will no longer be open from 4 November. Patients can also self-refer to the CRHT.

There will be a CRHT team in each of the three boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. The teams can be contacted on the following numbers:

  • Barnet                  0208 702 4040
  • Enfield                 0208 702 3800
  • Haringey              0208 702 6700

In addition, a new triage service will operate from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Friday and provide face to face patient assessments for non-urgent referrals to help provide patients with a smoother experience. Referrals to the triage service can be made by GPs or other health or social care professionals.

Urgent and non-urgent referrals to the Trust’s specialist adult mental health services, such as eating disorders and personality disorders, and to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services will remain unchanged.

Once the new services are in place there will be a review period.  The Trust will seek views from service users and partners to ensure these developments are meeting their needs, improving the quality of care they receive and improving access to services for commissioners.

The Trust is also introducing a full RAID service (Rapid, Assessment, Intervention and Discharge) into North Middlesex Hospital and an Enhanced Liaison Psychiatry service into Barnet General Hospital.  This will be phased in from November 2013 and will be fully in place by January 2014.

RAID is a specialist multidisciplinary mental health service, working within acute hospitals, for people aged 16 and over. The service will provide an advanced psychiatric liaison team for the whole hospital, based on the RAID model. The teams will consist of doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals and will operate 24 hours a day in North Middlesex and from 9am-9pm on weekdays and 9am-5pm on weekends in Barnet.

The liaison psychiatry service will work in conjunction with the Trust’s new Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Service.
